Is it Too Late for Plastic Surgery?

As a plastic surgeon near Palo Alto, I have many patients ask me, “What is the right age for plastic surgery?” The truth is, there is no magic number. Plastic surgery may be an appropriate option for people of any age depending on a variety of factors, such as:

  • Physical health

A complete health evaluation must be performed prior to your procedure in order to determine whether you are able to undergo plastic surgery. Individuals who eat healthfully, are at a stable weight and exercise regularly are typically the best candidates.

  • Emotional readiness

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Understanding the benefits and risks of your procedure and adjusting to your new image take emotional fortitude. I usually recommend that my patients choose plastic surgery when they are at an emotionally stable time in their lives, rather than during a period of stress or transition.

  • Your expectations

People who are most satisfied after surgery are those who have realistic expectations about their results. Although plastic surgery has helped many people gain a better body image and improved self-confidence, it is not going to make all of your problems disappear.
