Come Together: The Science Behind Silicone

Come Together: The Science Behind Silicone

One of the keys to achieving natural-looking results for my breast augmentation patients in Tucson is offering a wide range of breast implant options. The FDA re-approved silicone breast implants in 2006, opening the door for many different kinds of implants and customized results for women. The newest trend is a highly cohesive silicone gel implant, which is rapidly gaining popularity among patients.

Relative to previous models, highly cohesive implants have increased cross-linking between silicone chains. This basically means the implant is filled with a form-stable gel that holds its shape and doesn’t leak when cut or punctured.

One of the first questions I hear from patients while explaining the defining features of highly cohesive implants is how this will affect results. The implants possess a very natural look and feel. Coined “gummy bear implants,” they mimic the soft and flexible texture of gummy bear candy.

Women can choose between round and teardrop-shaped implants. Each have a number of benefits, and a qualified surgeon can help patients choose the right option.
