The Importance of Patient Coordinators

Learn more about what a patient coordinator does at the San Diego plastic surgery practice of Dr. Richard Chaffoo.

You’ve probably heard a lot about the importance of choosing the right surgeon, but I feel like it’s time to shed some light on the often unsung heroes of plastic surgery: patient coordinators. Their vitally important role is to act as an advocate and an ally for both patient and surgeon. And at my San Diego plastic surgery practice, they’re an integral part of our team.

Patient coordinators need to wear a lot of hats. For example, a patient coordinator will often:

  • Explain procedures
  • Answer patient questions
  • Schedule surgery dates
  • Review pre and post-op instructions
  • Offer guidance and support for patients and their families

By meeting with and evaluating a surgeon’s patient coordinator, you will be gaining important insight into whether or not you should choose their practice. If the patient coordinator doesn’t make you feel comfortable, informed, respected and prepared for your procedure – there’s something wrong. I’ve actually found four wonderful patient coordinators to join my San Diego plastic surgery practice. With more than one patient coordinator, my patients get the personal attention they need in a timely manner.
