A lot of people have tried different hair removal products and services over the years only to be disappointed by their results. So it makes sense that I’ve spoken with a number of patients who are skeptical about laser hair removal. At our Albany, NY practice, though, we have found these treatments to be very safe and effective. Here are some common misconceptions:
- Laser hair removal is painful. Many of the new lasers have been designed for optimal comfort. For example, at our practice, we use the LightSheer® DUET™ laser, which has a special hand-piece that uses suction to pull the follicles up from the skin. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the treatments are and only feel the gentle pressure from the suction.
- Only certain colors of hair can be removed. Laser light is attracted to the melanin, or dark pigment, in hair. This doesn’t mean that individuals with lighter hair aren’t good candidates, or that they won’t get good results, but it could mean that they will need more treatments to achieve optimal results.
- It only works on people of certain skin types. Laser technology is continually advancing. Today, there are numerous lasers available for use on a variety of skin types.
- Frequent treatments are necessary. Laser hair removal does take more than one treatment to be as effective as possible, because each hair follicle goes through its own individual growth cycle. Usually, you’ll need between 4 and 6 treatments, spaced several weeks apart. Once that’s done, your hair reduction should last a long time.
