Breast Implants: Under or Over the Muscle?

There are a number of options available for customizing your breast enhancement procedure. In addition to choosing the right breast implant size, shape, and style, I always advise my breast augmentation patients in Destin, FL on whether to place their implants under or over the muscle. Although one approach is not necessarily “better” than the other, there are advantages and tradeoffs to each. Only through careful evaluation by a board-certified plastic surgeon can you properly determine which technique is right for you. However, the chart below can help you get a general idea of the pros and cons of each method.

Over the Muscle

Pros Cons
Less surgical involvement Less implant coverage
Shortened recovery time Higher incidence of capsular contracture
Best for women with adequate breast tissue More likely to show implant rippling

Under the Muscle

Pros Cons
Better coverage of the implant Longer surgical procedure
Soft, natural-feeling breasts Prolonged recovery
Lower incidence of capsular contracture More post-operative discomfort
