Cosmetic Surgery Getting a Bad Rap?

cosmetic surgery in Las Vegas - getting a bad rap?

Let’s face it: the images you see in the tabloids and media of bad plastic surgery results can stick with you, and they may taint your view of certain procedures. Sensationalism surrounds the victims of bad cosmetic surgery – think of Joan Rivers or Mickey Rourke and what probably comes to mind is “awful face lift” or “too much BOTOX®.” However, we don’t hear very much about the cosmetic surgery success stories in Hollywood, and I think that’s too bad.

Shock Factor

As with most things, the media focuses on extreme results and shocking stories. Extremes are the norm in Hollywood, where the pressure to look young and slim is intense, and being successful depends on looking gorgeous all the time. However, facial rejuvenation treatments and body contouring procedures have been popular among non-celebrities for years, and the natural results most people achieve have them looking youthful and refreshed without all the gossip and drama. I have hundreds of patients who are thrilled with the results of their surgery, and very few people outside of Hollywood take cosmetic surgery to such an extreme. When procedures are performed by a skilled plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, a person may look years younger without the telltale signs of surgery.

Cosmetic Surgery Anonymous

There is no doubt that a small percentage of patients can become “addicted” to cosmetic surgery. They will continue to have surgery performed despite evidence that it isn’t necessary, ignoring warnings from friends and medical professionals. As with any addiction, they need a “fix” and will never be satisfied with their body image. Making matters worse, these patients may even be enticed by disreputable doctors who make promises of impossible results and a quick recovery. At my practice, I carefully review the medical history of patients during the consultation and ask questions so that I feel comfortable with a patient’s goals and concerns.

Get the Facts

As with any medical procedure, be sure to review your options thoroughly before having surgery. Find a plastic surgeon who is board certified and can show you before and after pictures of actual patients. Be suspicious of anyone who promises exceptional results, especially if it seems too good to be true. An experienced and trustworthy surgeon will be honest about the results you can expect.
