My practice recently held a patient appreciation day to show how much we value those who have trusted us with their care. Over the years I’ve spent honing my skills as a plastic surgeon in Toronto and Mississauga, I have come to believe it is vital for surgeons to remember that our profession is all about the patient.
It is essential that we show patients the attentiveness, respect, and care they deserve. This philosophy starts at the reception desk and extends through the consultation process, surgery, recovery, and beyond. Patients should feel comfortable contacting their surgeons for years after their procedures if they have questions or are interested in other enhancements. A continued relationship is important.
Another way surgeons can show respect to their patients is to continually work hard to improve their skills and stay at the forefront of aesthetic medicine. A surgeon can only offer his or her patients the best care if he or she is thoroughly educated on the latest techniques available.
We as surgeons also need to make patients feel appreciated and heard. Surgeons and staff must provide opportunities for patients to voice their thoughts, either in the office or online through social media. This starts with creating a comfortable atmosphere based on respect.
