After Weight Loss, California, Facelift

People who have lost a large amount of weight from exercise or bariatric surgery often find that while they look thinner and trimmer, and definitely feel much healthier, gravity and those years of having extra pounds to carry around have left a mark on their face. Sometimes, a loose, flabby look persists even after weight loss, and after losing volume in your facial tissues you may also be noticing new wrinkles and folds.

If you are considering post weight loss facial surgery near San Francisco, you have special concerns. Post weight loss patients typically need to accomplish two important goals.

1 – Tighten Loose Skin

Superficial treatments like laser resurfacing are sometimes sufficient, but for patients who have lost a lot of weight, more invasive treatments are often required.

Over time, the excess fat on a person’s face is pulled downward by gravity, accelerating many of the processes that make your face look “old.” While you are overweight, your fat hides some of the evidence of the downward pull, but when you slim down, you may see noticeable folds at the corners of your mouth or eyes.

Using up-to-date techniques, an Oakland-area postbariatric surgeon can adjust “standard” facial surgery procedures to take these problems into account. For instance, a facelift procedure after weight loss surgery may incorporate techniques to adjust the “jowl” area specifically, or may include brow lift, eyelid surgery, or neck procedures to correct that “downward” effect in specific areas.

2 – Eliminate Lingering Fatty Patches

After weight loss, smaller fatty patches may remain in the face and create sagginess around the jaw line, neck, or lower cheeks. While a “standard” facelift will help tighten these areas somewhat, the more noticeable areas often can be corrected more effectively if the surgeon performs liposuction of the neck or chin area at the same time. Occasionally, a post weight loss surgery patient in San Francisco will also form smaller fatty patches above or below the eyes, which may require blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

Planning Your Procedure

While you have many of the same goals as other plastic surgery patients and your procedure will demand some of the same techniques, post bariatric surgery in the Bay Area also requires extra understanding of and sensitivity to the ways weight loss affects the facial tissues. A good Oakland-area post bariatric surgeon should be able to demonstrate training and authority in the area of bariatric surgery specifically. When you meet with surgeons, be sure to ask how they plan to address factors like loose skin and localized facial fat.
