Patients who have asymmetric breasts obviously would prefer to regain a more balanced look, and many of them opt for cosmetic surgery like breast augmentation.
At the Miami plastic surgery practice where I see patients, I challenge women to ask themselves a few critical questions about breast surgery motivations before explaining the options.
Questions to Start You Off
To evaluate your current breast shape, you should look at your breasts in a mirror from the front and both sides while your shoulders are straight, and also consider their shape when you lean forward so that your back is horizontal and your breasts are unsupported. Ask yourself these questions:
- What is the cause of my breast unevenness?
- What characteristics (volume, position, nipple location, etc.) seem most uneven?
- What is my desired breast volume?
- Keeping in mind my desired breast volume, how does that affect which features I see as most uneven?
Asymmetric breasts can occur for many reasons, including weight fluctuation, genetic factors, mastectomy, or the presence of breast cysts, which need to be addressed prior to cosmetic surgery. For the majority of women, though, an imbalanced breast appearance is mostly due to the hormones and volume change that affect breasts during and after pregnancy.
Options for Correcting Breast “Flatness” and Volume Imbalances
Thinking about your desired breast size is important because if both of your breasts are smaller than you would prefer, breast augmentation might be an ideal option to correct both uneven volume and uneven “flatness” which commonly results from loss of skin elasticity.
Often, women come to South Florida Center assuming they need a breast lift, not thinking about the fact that when formerly full breasts lose volume, they appear to droop, and breast enlargement in Fort Lauderdale will often correct that false impression of sagginess by restoring volume. Saline implants are the most popular “rebalancing” breast augmentation choice in Miami because they allow the surgeon to size each implant very precisely.
Options for Reducing Size and Correcting Uneven Breast Position
Women who have asymmetric breasts also need to think about their desired breast volume because the typical solution – breast lift – involves some loss of tissue. Commonly, a woman will experience sagging (ptosis) of both breasts, but find it more severe in one breast than in the other. This is especially true for women who have lost a lot of weight.
Sometimes, breast augmentation can correct the flattened breasts, but in cases where the breasts still have greater volume that is only spread thin, breast reduction in Fort Lauderdale is generally much more effective. Breast reduction and breast lift both remove excess skin and, if necessary, fat from the bottom half of the breast in order to allow your own tissues to hold the breast in a more natural, youthful position.
