surgeon performing surgery 3 Plastic Surgeon Types

By: James Romanelli,, MD

Almost every week, I have patients who tells me how grateful they are that I took the time to listen during the consultation; not every Long Island plastic surgeon does that, and it really means something when patients find a doctor who cares. Hearing some of these appreciative comments got me thinking about how surgeons can let their patients down, and I came up with “three types” of plastic surgeons who fit this profile:

  • The Invisible Man / Woman: This doctor may care a lot when you first come in the door, but after your procedure they disappear off the face of the planet. This is bad for your recovery and peace of mind, so a surgeon’s availability after surgery and commitment to following up can actually say a lot about how much he or she really values your comfort.
  • The Manufacturer: A surgeon who is really “business” oriented may focus too much on turning around a high number of surgeries, and not take the time to get to know each patient.
  • The Salesman: A doctor may have a kind and friendly manner, but their skills may not match their great personality. I think this is one area where patients’ “gut feelings” about a surgeon can really steer them wrong, because no matter how nice a surgeon seems, if they are behind the times they are less likely to provide a high-quality result.

What do you think? Share some other plastic surgeon types, or what you’ve done to avoid the “wrong” surgeon.
