Silicone or saline – how do you choose? If you are considering breast enlargement in New Jersey, it helps to know the history of breast implants to understand the latest generation of saline and silicone gel models.
Wax implants?
Today, breast implants for New Jersey patients are a safe and effective way to enhance a woman’s appearance and increase self-confidence. However, in the past, ineffective and even harmful materials such as paraffin wax and polyvinyl sponges were used to enhance breast size and shape. Adverse effects and unsatisfactory results led to the creation of implants with a solid silicone shell containing either saline (sterile salt water) or silicone.
Is silicone safe?
The silicone implant designs available in the 1970s and 80s contained a type of silicone that was closer to being a liquid than a solid. In the event of implant rupture, the silicone contained within these implants could leak and spread to surrounding tissue. In addition to being difficult to remove completely from the body during breast implant revision surgery, some women believed that leaking silicone was causing autoimmune disorders.
To address these safety concerns, numerous studies have been conducted on silicone implants. Ultimately, after over a decade of research, no definitive link to health risks was established through the use of silicone implants. The most recent generation of silicone implants – known as cohesive gel implants – provides a natural-looking result with enhanced durability and a substantially reduced risk of leakage in the event of implant rupture.
This is an excellent time to consider breast augmentation because you have a choice between two highly trusted implant types, both with their own unique advantages. I offer breast enlargement with both saline and silicone implants and strive to educate all of my patients on the benefits of each to help them decide which is best for their breast surgery.
