Drinking Alcohol after Cosmetic Surgery

General Cosmetic Surgery

By: Francisco Canales, MD

My practice is in Santa Rosa, near some of the most famous vineyards in the United States, so I understand the appeal of a delicious glass of wine. After cosmetic surgery, when you’re feeling concerned about your recovery and your results, a tall glass of wine, an ice-cold beer, or a tasty cocktail might sound especially welcome. Unfortunately, I’m here to tell you to resist – at least for a while after your Napa area cosmetic surgery.

Reasons to Avoid Alcohol

  1. Medications are often prescribed after surgery for pain control or other purposes. Alcohol can interfere with these medications, causing potentially dangerous interactions.
  2. Alcohol can also increase bleeding, not a healthy situation for your post-surgery body.

When to Resume

Your plastic surgeon will give you specific instructions about diet, exercise, and when you can begin alcohol consumption again. In general, a good rule is that you shouldn’t drink alcohol until at least after you have finished taking any medications.
