Kelly Ripa from Live with Regis and Kelly recently told one newspaper that she was interested in breast implants but was “too wimpy” to go through with surgery. I think it’s good that she’s not underestimating the effort and commitment involved in cosmetic surgery, but I also think that, like many patients, Ms. Ripa is overestimating just how uncomfortable plastic surgery has to be. Some quick thoughts that should reassure most patients who are in the same position:
There’s no reason for the discomfort to pose a problem: A skilled surgeon who knows what he or she is doing can take many precautions to help prevent most significant postoperative discomfort.
What this means for the patient: Like most surgeons I’ll provide prescription pain medication after surgeries like breast augmentation and tummy tuck, but most of my patients don’t feel the need for anything stronger than over-the-counter meds after the first few days. With medical spa treatments and certain procedures such as liposuction, prescription medication may not even be necessary.
If you know what to expect, recovery shouldn’t be stressful: If you don’t know better, it’s easy to worry over whether what you’re experiencing is normal. Fortunately, there are plenty of surgeons out there who will do a good job of educating you about the process beforehand and making themselves available to answer your questions as you heal.
What this means for the patient: When you know in detail what to expect, it’s much easier to relax – better for you and for your healing body – so it’s well worth your time to find a surgeon who takes an active role in making sure you’re informed.
