Meet Dr. Thoman
A gastrointestinal and bariatric surgeon, Dr. David Thoman is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He completed his residency at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and went on to complete an advanced laparoscopic fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
Specializing in the Single-Incision Technique
Instead of the typical use of multiple incisions during laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Thoman was the first surgeon on the Central Coast to perform the single-incision approach to the following procedures:
- LAP-BAND® surgery
- Hernia repair surgery
- Gallbladder surgery
- Appendectomy
With this minimally-invasive technique, the instruments and camera are all inserted through one incision in the belly button. When the incision has healed there is no remaining visible scar. This tech-nique is a good choice for anyone concerned with the cosmetic aspect of surgery. It is possible that patients experience slightly less pain with this approach, as well.
Weight Loss Surgery
People who struggle with obesity after multiple attempts to lose weight through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes can improve their health and quality of life through weight loss surgery such as LAP-BAND and gastric bypass surgery. To optimize the success of surgery, Dr. Thoman provides Santa Barbara weight loss programs that include nutritional counseling and regular exercise.
Gastrointestinal Surgery
Dr. Thoman specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery for diseases and disorders of the abdominal organs, such as the intestines, stomach, colon, and gallbladder. He also performs surgery to help patients relieve hernias and heartburn with a minimal recovery period.
