Many of my younger (19 to 20-something) breast enhancement patients aren’t thinking about starting families anytime soon, but if you are planning to have children it’s still worthwhile to keep your family plans in mind when you are setting your cosmetic surgery goals.
This week and next week I’ll share some of my answers to the top questions about plastic surgery before pregnancy, starting with breast enhancement.
1. Breast Enhancements and Breastfeeding
Q: Will breast enhancements prevent me from breastfeeding?
A: For most of my patients the answer is no. Breast augmentation in Tampa and most breast lift procedures don’t affect the nipple or the breast ducts, but some surgeries, such as larger-scale breast lift and reduction procedures can separate the connection between the nipple and the breast glands, making breastfeeding difficult or impossible.
2. Breast Enhancements and Breast Milk
Q: Do silicone breast implants affect breast milk?
A: No. The FDA has approved silicone implants as safe, and you can rest easy that your breast milk will be unaffected by your choice of breast implants.
3. Pre-Pregnancy Implant Choices
Q: Is there one type of implant that’s “better” for women who want to have children later?
A: No, not really. The changes your breasts might undergo during pregnancy don’t really affect the factors like chest width that guide surgeons’ implant choices. That said, if you have a family tendency to develop dramatic changes in breast volume or position because of pregnancy alone, it might be better to wait until after pregnancy for your breast augmentation procedure.
