I know my facelift patients in Boca Raton are as invested in their results as I am, but it doesn’t always keep them from making post-surgical choices that have a negative impact. One of the foremost among these is sun exposure.
My practice is located in Florida, a state known for beautiful weather and gorgeous beaches. It’s natural for people to want to get out and enjoy the sunshine here, especially if they have a new look to show off. If they are my patients, however, they will have received a very clear warning from me, and one that all cosmetic surgery patients should hear: avoid the sun as much as possible.
There are three main reasons I tell my patients to avoid sun exposure after their Boca Raton face lift surgery.
- Sun exposure is one of the factors that contribute to the signs of aging on your face. In short, it’s usually one of the reasons a person needed a face lift in the first place. Continued sun exposure could speed up the skin’s aging process and limit how long your results will last.
- Sun exposure can lead to prolonged swelling and less than an ideal result.
- Sun exposure will increase the discoloration associated with scars, making them more visible.
When your surgeon tells you that it is safe to resume your normal activities, there are still a few things that you should remember to do. You can lay on the beach, run, hike, bike or swim, but you should always wear a high SPF sunscreen and a hat when outdoors.
