The importance of a surgeon’s qualifications is something that I emphasize to anyone considering plastic surgery in New Jersey. I was interested to read Dr. Michele Cooper’s post (here) about board-certification and thought I’d add to her comments with a discussion of an added qualification: membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
What Is the ASPS?
I was President of the ASPS in 2008 and believe that it is an organization that holds great value for patients and surgeons alike. Since 1931, the ASPS has served as an advocate for safety and quality care by requiring its member surgeons to adhere to strict requirements. With a Web site launched in 1996, the ASPS continues to educate the public with information about specific procedures, news, and statistics.
Why Choose an ASPS Surgeon?
If you choose an ASPS Member Surgeon, you know that they:
- Have at least 6 years of surgical training and experience, 3 years of which are in plastic surgery
- Are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- Operate only in accredited facilities
- Adhere to a strict code of ethics
- Are committed to continuing education, patient safety, and providing the best possible care
Although some surgeons who are not ASPS members may be highly skilled and experienced, ASPS membership is a symbol that a surgeon meets stringent criteria. It’s one more sign that the surgeon you are considering is highly skilled and experienced in the field.
